Egal Shidad: Stories of Somali Health for Radio, TV and Classroom Use
Using stories to strengthen Somali immigrant families.
Update
Egal Shidad: Stories of Somali Health is pleased to announce the completion of its first production, a program about mental health which aired multiple times... Read More
In television and on radio versions, Somali producer Mukhtar Gaaddasaar takes the
audience on a journey to learn about mental health that includes storytelling, personal opinions, historical accounts of traditional ceremonies, guidance from an Imam, and valuable insight from two mental health professionals experienced in working with Somalis.
Egal Shidad is a humorous character from Somali folktales. We have borrowed him for this project not only to serve as an “ice breaker” for such a stigmatized issue, but also to demonstrate how a family can confront mental illness and begin working together.
This program will be available on DVD very soon and will include English subtitles. We are keeping a list of those interested in receiving the DVD. If you would like to be added to that list, please email Egal Shidad. If you have already contacted us from this website, you are on the list. We will distribute the DVDs as soon as they are available. Thank you for your interest!
Free, corresponding lesson materials for English language learners (ELLs) are available now. These materials provide ELL instructors with lesson activities that build adult learners' English language skills related to the mental health concepts in the video. While the materials were designed for use with Somali adults, many of the activities are appropriate for use with other language/cultural groups. Check out these ELL resources and tell us what you think!
Stayed tuned for an update on this curriculum and feedback from ELL students.

I realize how much perseverance today's immigrants have and even my own relatives had 100 years ago. It’s really hard to leave behind the sights, sounds, food, family and friends that make up "home." There is so much more to immigration than just coming here to get opportunities.
One has to survive the process.

An immigrant is someone who willingly wants to change their situation in a new country. You have to cope with a new language, culture, and community. It is very exciting because compared to where they are coming from there is a lot of opportunity for education, work and advancement [in the U.S.] It is harder for some people to adapt than
others.
