Tuesday, almost two-dozen young people began sit-ins at the offices of five powerful senators.
The youths are demanding passage of the DREAM Act, a bill that would provide legal U.S. residency for college students and military personnel who’ve lived in the country since childhood.
“My parents sacrificed everything for me so I could pursue the American Dream,” says Reyna Wences, 19, of Chicago. “I’ve been fighting for my rights and those of my family and community.”
U.S. Capitol Police spokeswoman Sgt. Kimberly Schneider says officers have arrested 12 people on misdemeanor disorderly conduct charges. She says the police aren’t naming those detainees until they’ve been processed.
Protesters say the arrested Chicagoans include Lulu Martínez, 20; Ireri Unzueta, 22; Jesús Morales, 22; David Morales, 20; Edy Dominguez, 25; and Uriel Sánchez, 19.
