Exercise Class for Somali Women: First-Person Story
Posted by harpharp1 October 30, 2009
I taught exercise classes for Somali women in Clarkston, GA. The first class had 35 women in attendance. As part of the class I incorporated the use of a Somali teenager, who would interpret and make sure everyone signed our waivers and sign-in sheets. Stretching was also a big part of the class. I brought in a drum for them to tap out directions on or their names and it was passed around. We did a lot of laughing at me trying to pronounce Somali words. I bought some Somali clothes and wore them to class - [the women] liked that. They allowed no men in the classes and actually kicked my boss, Hussein, out of the class (he was bringing water). These were wonderful classes.
