Exercise for Somali Women with HearME and Move
Posted by Ericka Tucker June 2, 2009
HEARMe and Move had it’s first exercise class for Somali women on Thursday, May 29th. Harpist Susan Ottzen taught a combination of Chi Gong and Yoga stretching. There were 18-20 women and girls present. Somali women did stretches sitting in a chair, leaning against a wall, sitting on the floor. They were delighted to be stretching, they were laughing at each other and at the instructor as well in her attempts to speak Somali. There were young women who exercise a lot, elderly women who never exercise, women in their mid 30’s who could do everything and children who watched. It was like a big exercise party.
