"Domestic Worker Safety & Dignity Project" Steering Committee Member Lorena Carrillo

1. To be an immigrant in the United States means that people come from their native country to find work here in order to be able to help their families because there is not much work available in their country of origin. Immigrants want to be able to give our families the best and we’re not criminals. As an immigrant myself, I am here fighting for my rights, just like anyone else who is not an immigrant. I want for there to be no barriers and for there to be equality between those who are immigrants and those who are not. I am proud to be an immigrant because immigrants are no different from everyone else.

2. I would like if the United States adopted the practice of having more municipal jobs available, because in Mexico anyone can work for the city as long as he or she is at least 18 years old. Unlike in the United States, people can receive work in Mexico without being a legal resident or speaking the dominant language. In Mexico, people have a more open attitude regarding work, and I would like it if there weren’t so many requirements and so many difficulties in finding work here.
